Janis Lyn Joplin (lahir di Port Arthur, 19 Januari 1943 – meninggal di Los Angeles, 4 Oktober 1970 pada umur 27 tahun) adalah penyanyi sekaligus pencipta lagu dan penulis aransemen asal Port Arthur, Texas, Amerika Serikat. Ia mencapai puncak kesuksesan pada akhir tahun 1960-an sebagai penyanyi solo setelah sebelumnya menjadi vokalis Big Brother and the Holding Company. Pada tahun 2004, majalah Rolling Stone menempatkannya di urutan ke-46 dalam daftar 100 Artis Terbesar Sepanjang Masa.[1] Joplin meninggal dunia di Los Angeles akibat overdosis. Joplin memiliki suara mezzo-soprano.

Karier
Janis Joplin dilahirkan dari ibu bernama Dorothy East (1913-1998) dan ayah bernama Seth Joplin (1910-1987)[2] Ayahnya adalah seorang insinyur di Texaco sementara ibunya adalah pegawai tata usaha di akademi bisnis. Janis memiliki dua orang adik, Michael dan Laura. Kedua orang tuanya merasa Janis selalu minta lebih diperhatikan dibandingkan kedua adiknya. Ibu Joplin berkata, "Dia tidak bahagia kalau tidak [banyak diperhatikan]. Kalau cuma diperhatikan biasa-biasa saja tidak cukup."[3]
Sewaktu remaja, ia berteman dengan kelompok berandalan. Salah seorang temannya memiliki album musisi blues Bessie Smith dan Leadbelly. Kedua artis blues tersebut nantinya menjadi inspirasi bagi Joplin untuk menjadi penyanyi.[4] Joplin mulai bernyanyi di paduan suara lokal dan mulai mendengarkan penyanyi-penyanyi blues lain seperti Odetta dan Big Mama Thornton.
Di sekolah, ia senang melukis, dan mulai menyanyikan lagu berirama blues dan folk bersama teman-temannya. Ia hampir-hampir tidak mempunyai teman di Sekolah Menengah Atas Thomas Jefferson. Joplin pernah berkata, "Aku dulunya anak yang canggung. Aku senang membaca dan melukis. Aku tidak membenci orang berkulit hitam."[3] Sebagai seorang remaja, ia kelebihan berat badan dan dilahirkan dengan kulit yang sensitif.[3][5] Teman-teman di SMA sering mempermainkannya dan memanggilnya dengan kata-kata yang tidak sopan.[3]
Joplin lulus sekolah menengah atas pada tahun 1960, dan sempat kuliah musim panas di Lamar State College of Technology di Beaumont, Texas[5] sebelum melanjutkan ke Universitas Texas di Austin tapi tidak sampai tamat.[6] Pada tahun 1962, surat kabar kampus memuat cerita tentang Janis Joplin yang diberi judul She Dares To Be Different.[6]
Awal karier
ebagai seorang pemberontak, idolanya adalah penyanyi blues wanita dan puisi yang ditulis oleh sastrawan era Beat Generation. Bulan Desember 1962, ketika berada di rumah seorang temannya, Janis Joplin merekam lagu pertama, "What Good Can Drinkin' Do" di sebuah pita kaset.[7] Ia pindah dari Texas pada tahun 1963, dan tinggal di North Beach sebelum pindah ke Haight-Ashbury. Pada tahun 1964, Joplin dan gitaris Jorma Kaukonen (nantinya menjadi anggota Jefferson Airplane) merekam beberapa lagu blues standar. Keduanya ditemani Margareta Kaukonen yang memakai mesin ketik sebagai perkusi. Sesi rekaman tersebut menghasilkan 6 buah lagu: "Typewriter Talk," "Trouble In Mind," "Kansas City Blues," "Hesitation Blues," "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out," "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy", dan "Long Black Train Blues". Keenam lagu tersebut nantinya dirilis sebagai album bootleg, The Typewriter Tape.

he King of the Blues is set to release a new album featuring covers of old blues songs from B.B. King’s early influences. With production by T Bone Burnett (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello) the set revisits the music that influenced B.B. in the 1950s, the beginning of King’s extraordinary professional journey that, literally, changed the texture of modern blues playing. One Kind Favor will be released on Geffen Records August 26th.

Recorded at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, CA One Kind Favor is meant to sound like an album recorded in the 50s. To get this sound Burnett and King replicated the kind of blues band King had back in the day bringing in some of the greats – Dr. John on piano, Nathan East on stand up acoustic bass and Jim Keltner on drums, to name a few. Studio conditions of the time were reproduced. The result is a vintage sounding album filled with the songs that influenced King in his early days as an artist.

In other B.B. news, on September 13th King– one of the few musicians in the world to be so honored – will preside at the opening of the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in his hometown of Indianola, MS. Also in September B.B. King will begin hosting his own weekly radio show on XM Radio on their newly relaunched blues channel “BB Kings Bluesville” (XM 74).

For more than 60 years, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them classics, won 14 Grammy® Awards, been inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of the Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award and the NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) Chairman’s Award, among many other awards. In a special ceremony at the Library of Congress, Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington presented B.B. with a “Living Legend” medal in honor of his achievements as a musician and ambassador for the blues. After 10,000 concerts, B.B. King continues to bring his music to audiences around the globe spending the better part of each year on the road with his beloved guitar, “Lucille.”
